La chiesa parrocchiale di San Giorgio
One of the historical landmarks in the Aosta Valley
The Parish Church of Saint George, situated on a prominent promontory, stands as one of the historical landmarks in the Aosta Valley. Already mentioned in a Bull by Pope Alexander III in 1176 under the name 'Ecclesia de Voce,' the original church dedicated to Saint George in the village of Voix was destroyed by either a flood or an avalanche. Reconstructed in the 15th century at its current location, it has undergone modifications over the centuries, including the elevation of the bell tower and the construction of a new Valsesian wooden altar in the Alpine Baroque style.
Local tradition recounts that the first parish church of Saint George stood in the 13th century in the hamlet of Vieux. Likely destroyed by a flood, a new building was reconstructed in its present location, slightly outside the inhabited center, on a solid rocky base, as seen from the 1700s onwards. Over time, the Church has undergone numerous interventions, shaping its features under the influence of various artists.
Internally, the predominantly neo-Gothic style and the intense blue color of the frescoes create a unique atmosphere. The Baroque main altar is a finely crafted work of art, carved, painted, and partially gilded. In the sanctuary, in a side chapel, the parish museum houses various statues and religious objects from different chapels, including fascinating items from the 17th century, such as a silver reliquary, a brass cross, and statues of Saint Margaret and Saint Anthony Abbot.
Next to the church, a small monumental cemetery narrates the history through commemorative tombstones of the village's founders. Fresh flowers beside the tombstones testify to the respect and love for ancestors by Rhêmes-Saint-Georges, reflecting a common tradition among all the village inhabitants.
The small parish museum is of remarkable value, featuring furnishings and small statues. The blue paintings inside exhibit a unique tone throughout the Aosta Valley. During restoration, skulls were found under the altar, all with bullet holes in the crania, a historically significant discovery. In front of the church, a historic cemetery transformed into a green lawn has tombstones moved against the wall of a house that was originally a stable and barn for the church itself.
